Trikala Korinthias

A place that combines mountain serenity and tranquility as well as adventure with activities in the snow-capped Zireia. In a distance of 1,5 hour from Athens and Patra and 25 km from Xilokastro, they belong administratively to the homonymous municipality and consist of three districts: Ano (Upper) , Mesaia (Middle) and Kato (Down) Trikala. In the prewar years (before WWII), Trikala was considered a privileged resort, because of the climate and the environment, while great personalities of the time were gathering there. Afterwards, war and internal migration devastated Trikala and the old sparkle was lost. But, in recent years intense tourist interest is created again, mainly for winter holidays but also for the beauties of the natural environment of the mountain.

Trikala Korinthias

Trikala is literally buried in the forest, in an extraordinarily rich landscape, surrounded by dense forests at 1,650 m altitude, from where above the plateau of Zireia, Psili Korfi (High Summit) is located. In Trikala many old stone houses are still preserved, illustrating the history of the area. The Tower of Notaradon dominates next to the church, where St. Gerasimos was born. The churches of Agios Dimitrios (St. Demetrius), Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas), Metamorphosis (Transfiguration) and the Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary), built in the 16th-18th century, are decorated with elaborate icons and hagiographies. The monastery of Agios Vlasios (St. Blaise), whose history is mixed with legends and traditions, was founded in the 14th century in honor of the saintly hermit who lived there and his icon is saved since then. During the Ottoman rule the monastery had a leading role and operated as a cultural and religious center for the entire area.
